The tear gas surrounded her like smoke. She could no longer see through the poison enveloping the crowd, yet she could hear splintering crackles, glass shattering into thousands of pieces. From the sounds of shards striking the pavement, she knew that the man she had fallen in love with had succeeded in smashing the big plate glass window of the coffee shop.
The company had  dared to sell non-shade grown coffee, grown on large farms that exploited workers, to turn a profit in the trendy store.
She couldn’t see the destruction, but she imagined the demure mermaid, with downcast eyes, long flowing hair, and a full crown, shivering and shaking into millions of fragments, the glass maiden exploding on the concrete sidewalk.

He was striking a blow against the World Trade Organization by destroying the logo of the coffee conglomerate.

Now she felt him come up behind her and grab her arm.

“Come on!” she heard his muffled, choked voice.

With that, they were running, half bent over, through the thick gas, with the sounds of the riot police running after them, getting closer,
black boots pounding on the slick wet pavement,
where idealism smashes into reality.
